¹ú²ú¾«Æ·

The Science Classroom Inclusivity Guidelines were released in 2019 to inform inclusive classroom practice and reflect the most contemporary research across the equity, diversity and inclusion field. These include five themes (diverse course content, personal pronouns, accessibility awareness, inclusive language and making assumptions) focused on face-to-face instruction. 

The Inclusive Online Learning Guidelines refine and extend these guidelines to include online and blended learning environments. These guidelines include three top guidelines which are: communicate for inclusion, increase digital accessibility and create inclusive digital spaces. 

Both guides were developed considering the absence of comprehensive guidelines that cover inclusivity in both traditional and virtual classrooms that seek to provide valuable information in readily accessible documents. 

Research indicates that students are more likely to flourish academically and personally in academic settings that acknowledge and respect their personal experiences, identities and backgrounds.

¹ú²ú¾«Æ· Science acknowledges that many staff have been affected by the Australian bushfires in 2019-2020 and COVID-19 in 2020-2021. There has been a significant change to the way academic staff are educating, researching and making an impact. Professional and technical staff have also had to adapt quickly to new ways of working and delivering for the ¹ú²ú¾«Æ· Science community. 

Many staff are experiencing more substantial additional responsibilities and experiencing some of the adverse effects of working remotely and/or in isolation. 

¹ú²ú¾«Æ· Science also acknowledges that during the crises staff have a social responsibility to extend themselves beyond work such as caring responsibilities and many staff will have encountered periods of severe disruption with impacts on their physical and mental wellbeing. 

The aim of these guidelines is to enable staff to have these impacts considered when discussing the achievements they've made during this time. 

¹ú²ú¾«Æ· Science is committed to increasing diverse representation at conferences, seminars, panels, colloquia, symposia and other events. As part of the ¹ú²ú¾«Æ· Science Strategy, the Science faculty is committed to lead the best practice of diversity and inclusion, to ensure no disadvantage on the basis of diverse characteristics.

These guidelines describe best practice methods of increasing diverse representation in the organisation and delivery of an event. We encourage all involved in events run by members of the ¹ú²ú¾«Æ· Science community and/or hosted at ¹ú²ú¾«Æ· Science to take a visible and audible stand to actively embrace diversity and inclusion.
