Given鈥痶he large diversity of microorganisms in the marine environment, it鈥檚 likely鈥痶hat they have evolved new resistance mechanisms against natural鈥痑ntibiotics. In this project, we use鈥痗lassical microbiological approaches and also鈥痟igh-throughput screening and functional analysis to discover new genes for antibiotic resistance and describe the potential of these genes to be transferred to pathogenic bacteria.鈥

This research is particularly important鈥痠n the light o鈥 鈥渟uperbu鈥漵鈥 that are鈥痳esistant to most existing antibiotics and that cause substantial problems in鈥痶he health system.
