The Energy Storage and Refrigeration facility conducts world-leading research and development on advanced energy storage technologies.听

Research areas include:

  • Redox flow batteries including听the vanadium听and iron flow battery systems听
  • Hybrid fuel cells including the vanadium oxygen hybrid fuel cell听
  • Electrolyte production methods听
  • Graphite and conducting plastic electrodes听
  • Membrane evaluation听
  • Enhanced flow battery cell and stack design (computational modelling and validation)听
  • Energy storage system level design听
  • Microgrid simulations听
  • Liquid metal batteries听
  • Refrigeration and air conditioner performance optimisation听

Our facilities听include:

  • Access to a 30 kW/130 kWh commercial VRB system听
  • Access to dedicated computation laboratories for advanced simulation modelling听
  • Extensive state of the art electrochemical analysis and battery test equipment听
  • Electrolyte characterisation equipment听
  • Inert atmosphere controlled high temperature furnaces听
  • Climate controlled chambers for evaluating effects of environmental parameters on energy storage system performance听
  • Access to advanced additive and automated manufacturing facilities听

This facility is also part of听听(The German-Australian Alliance for Electrochemical Technologies for Storage of Renewable Energy).听
