The聽Photonics and Optical Communications Group聽is home to a variety of research projects covering a broad range of photonics and terahertz applications.听


We have聽a聽long history聽in聽discovering methods still used today.听Our team have聽developed many theoretical methods of聽analysing聽the performance of various kinds of聽fibres聽such as the stress birefringence in聽polarisation-maintaining optical聽fibre.听

Now,聽our聽ongoing research聽is focused on聽fibre聽laser, optical聽fibre聽sensing, special silica and polymer optical聽fibres聽and devices, planar photonic and waveguide devices and photonic signal processing techniques.听

Our聽areas of research include:聽

  • Specialty silica and polymer optical聽fibres聽
  • Photonic聽fibre聽devices: Lasers, gratings, amplifiers聽
  • Fibre聽based sensors: structural health monitoring, distributed voltage/current sensors聽
  • New photonic materials: Including organic materials for vision, display, tactile sensors聽
  • Liquid crystal transducers for low-power, intrinsically safe sensing applications聽
  • Optrodes聽technologies for brain/machine interface聽
  • Integrated terahertz (THz) devices for next generation of wireless communication聽
  • Sensing and imaging using terahertz (THz) radiation聽
