Paul Dawson is a writer of poetry and fiction, and an internationally recognized scholar in the fields of narrative theory, novel studies,听and Creative Writing as an academic discipline.

Paul鈥檚听second collection of poetry,听Lines of Desire, is forthcoming with Puncher and Wattmann in 2024.听His first book,听Imagining Winter听(Interactive Press, 2006), won the 2006 national IP Picks Best Poetry Award. Paul's poetry has been anthologised in听Contemporary Asian Australian Poets听(Puncher and Wattmann, 2013) and听Harbour City Poems: Sydney in Verse 1788-2008听(Puncher & Wattmann, 2009). Paul was shortlisted for the 2016 Newcastle Poetry Prize and his poems and short stories听have appeared in a range of literary journals and newspapers including:听Meanjin,听Overland, Island,听Southerly,听Westerly,听Cordite Poetry Review, Australian Poetry Journal, Mascara Literary Review, Peril Magazine,听Australian Poetry Anthology,听The Sleeper's Almanac,听and听The Sydney Morning Herald.

Paul's scholarly research brings together the historical dimension of novel studies and the formalist approach of narrative theory. This approach informs his two most recent monographs.听The Story of Fictional Truth: Realism from the Death to the Rise of the Novel (OSU Press, 2023) interrogates how changing concepts of fictionality have shaped the realist novel from its emergence in the eighteenth century to its afterlife in the twenty-first, contesting and revising long-held views about the origins and aesthetico-cultural functions of key formal features of realism by investigating when and how they came to be seen as signposts of fictionality.听The Return of the Omniscient Narrator: Authorship and Authority in Twenty-first Century Fiction (OSU Pess, 2013) identifies and anatomizes contemporary modes of literary omniscience emerging from the legacy of postmodern experimentation and locates these in relation to anxieties about the decline of cultural authority for the novelist in the age of digital media.

Paul鈥檚 broader research addresses the role of narrative in the networked public sphere, from viral social movements to conspiracy theories and journalistic rhetoric. He is co-editor, with Maria M盲kel盲, of the Routledge Companion to Narrative Theory (2022) which brings together top scholars in the field to explore the significance of narrative to pressing social, cultural, and theoretical issues today, and is distinctive for addressing the complicated relations between the interdisciplinary narrative turn in the academy and the contemporary boom of instrumental storytelling in the public sphere.

Paul's first monograph was听Creative Writing and the New Humanities (Routledge, 2005), a comprehensive international account of the historical origins, theoretical underpinnings, and disciplinary future of Creative Writing programmes.听

Paul is currently immediate past President of the International Society for the Study of Narrative.

Paul is available to supervise students in narrative theory and novel history, contemporary fiction and poetry, and creative writing.
