How Nicole Yade鈥檚 AGSM learning experience pathway is helping to shape Sydney鈥檚 only women鈥檚 daytime refuge

As the General Manager of听, Nicole Yade wanted to improve her leadership skills to better help vulnerable women in need. Nicole is now using the frameworks from her AGSM @ 国产精品 Business School听Certificate in Executive Management & Development (CEMD)听to help the organisation prepare for a brighter future.

Nicole鈥檚 sense of social justice blossomed at a young age in the Western Sydney suburb of Blacktown.

鈥淎 lot of people in my community didn鈥檛 have the same opportunities as others in Sydney, even though we lived in the same city,鈥 she says. 鈥淚 always knew people from Blacktown had just as much to offer, but because of poverty or lack of education, they didn鈥檛 seem to get the same chances as others.鈥澨

Nicole started in not-for-profit trauma services more than 20 years ago. She has worked extensively with a range of people in need, including refugees and asylum seekers 鈥 including those in immigration detention 鈥 and survivors of childhood sexual abuse and domestic violence.

In 2017, she saw an opening for the General Manager position at Lou鈥檚 Place, Sydney鈥檚 only daytime women鈥檚 refuge. Nicole says the all-women鈥檚 service aligned with her values.

鈥淚f you can improve the lives of women, women will then improve the lives of children and families,鈥 she says. 鈥淭he impact we make becomes amplified.鈥

Since then she鈥檚 used her vast NFP experience 鈥 and what she learned through AGSM听Certificate in Executive Management and Development (CEMD)听program 鈥 to guide Lou鈥檚 into its next chapter.

Getting women back on their feet

Based in a Kings Cross terrace since 1999, Lou鈥檚 is what Nicole calls 鈥渁n old-school drop-in centre鈥 open to all women. It鈥檚 a place where women dealing with poverty, homelessness, abuse, addiction and mental illness can get help.听

In addition to a free daily breakfast and lunch, visitors can meet with case managers to set and work toward goals or receive counselling. Daily activities span everything from art and music to resume writing, massages and physiotherapy.

Lou鈥檚 seven permanent staff members and approximately 100 volunteers help as many as 60 women a day 鈥 all without regular government funding.听

鈥淲e鈥檙e grassroots, so we can be really independent and driven by the needs of the people we serve,鈥 Nicole says. 鈥淲e can meet them at their point of need and work with them for as long as they鈥檇 like. It鈥檚 very person-centred.鈥

Sharpening her skillset听

Nicole hit the ground running after joining Lou鈥檚 in 2017, getting her head around the organisation and identifying service gaps.听

But to really improve Lou鈥檚, Nicole knew she had to continue developing her own leadership skills. One area she identified that needed improvement was her negotiating skills to advocate for better agreements around food, supplies, service provision and donations.听

鈥淚 felt like I could push a little bit more 鈥 represent the organisation in a fair way while making sure we got the balance right and were doing what鈥檚 best for Lou鈥檚,鈥 she says.

So Nicole enrolled in the two-week virtual learning听Negotiation Essentials听Short Course at AGSM led by Noa Sheer, AGSM Adjunct Faculty. Here, Nicole learned practical ways to offer more value not only for Lou鈥檚, but also the other parties with whom she is working.听

鈥淚t was such an inspirational experience, and Noa is such an incredible teacher,鈥 Nicole says. 鈥淪he teaches you to think outside the nuts and bolts and consider what extra value you can add to every negotiation.鈥

Continuing to learn outside the classroom

After completing Negotiation Essentials, Nicole 鈥渏umped at the opportunity鈥 to accept a partial scholarship for the intensive, five-day听AGSM General Manager Program (GMP)听led by Matthew Byrne Program Manager and AGSM Adjunct Faculty.

It provided her with the practical tools for developing leadership strategies and enabled Nicole to network with other General Managers 鈥 something she had been missing.

鈥淟ou鈥檚 is the smallest organisation I鈥檝e worked in, and there are so many great things about it,鈥 she says. 鈥淏ut part of what I miss is having other senior leaders to exchange ideas with.鈥澨

The GMP let Nicole network and trade ideas with other senior leaders from different sectors and walks of life and hear about the challenges they were facing within their own organisations.听

鈥淒iscussing the importance of being authentic 鈥 being vulnerable, listening to others and acknowledging we don鈥檛 have all the answers 鈥 really helped ease those feelings of self-doubt and impostor syndrome that can creep in.鈥

But the General Manager Program鈥檚 impact on Lou鈥檚 has lasted much longer than five days. Nicole reached out to Patrick Sharry, a facilitator on GMP and AGSM Faculty, after finishing the course for some advice about the future of her organisation.听

鈥淧atrick told us he was happy to chat about anything we might need in the future,鈥 she says. 鈥淚 took him up on that because at Lou鈥檚 we鈥檙e working on the future of our organisation and he鈥檚 a strategy expert.鈥

Patrick met with Nicole a few times to discuss her goals. He also brought two current AGSM MBA students to one of the meetings. They continue to work with Nicole, helping her create a new long-term strategy for Lou鈥檚.

鈥淚 can鈥檛 just apply the strategy I used at one of the larger NGOs here,鈥 she says. 鈥淵ou can use some of the same principals, but the ownership has to sit with the community the work belongs to.鈥

After raising nearly $5 million in its latest campaign 鈥 most of which Nicole says came from the organisation鈥檚 generous community of donors 鈥 Lou鈥檚 is preparing to move to a new, larger headquarters in Redfern.听

Nicole says the ongoing, pro bono strategic support from Patrick and AGSM MBA students is helping to shape Lou鈥檚 future for the better.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a great time to think about how we can maximise our opportunities while staying true to our mission,鈥 she says.听

鈥淲e鈥檙e going to have a bigger home that can service more women, but what do the practical aspects of that move look like? And how can we approach and partner with some of the amazing businesses in Redfern to help us achieve our mission?鈥

Giving women in need the support they deserve

Just one course short of earning her CEMD, Nicole enrolled in the two-week virtual听Accelerating Innovation in your Organisation Short Course. She says learning from Shanie Atkinson and Saul Brown, AGSM Adjunct Faculty helped her approach innovation from a different angle.

鈥淪o much energy goes into the frontline service delivery aspect, but the course got me thinking about innovation in how we work with donors, how we track information 鈥 all those systems and processes that sit behind the service delivery.

鈥淚t鈥檚 helped me to see that challenges aren鈥檛 difficulties, but opportunities 鈥 like starting our听听to help mothers work on their relationships with their children. When it鈥檚 safe to do so, we help them navigate the child protection and legal system to bring their children home.鈥

Nicole says she鈥檚 not done at AGSM. She鈥檚 going to apply for the听听and is considering enrolling in the听AGSM MBAX program, specialising in Social Impact.

鈥淎GSM鈥檚 online content is so user friendly and so well organised, and their support is so valuable and efficient, it鈥檚 just been so inspirational,鈥 she says. 鈥淚鈥檝e had such a great learning experience.鈥

Nicole says continuing her study is only fair considering the situations of the women who come to Lou鈥檚.听

鈥淭hese women deserve our best,鈥 she says. 鈥淎nd it鈥檚 our responsibility to keep learning and keep in touch with research and other areas of development to make sure we鈥檙e delivering the very best.

鈥淎nything we can do to be better 鈥 staying driven by that purpose and meaning in our work 鈥 is essential.鈥
