Biography

Abel achieved his BSc and MSc degree from University of Gondar, Ethiopia. He worked as an optometrist and lecturer and actively participated in teaching, research, and community service at the University of Gondar. He has also extensive experience in delivering training for integrated eye care workers on the diagnosis and management of ocular conditions and prevention of blindness. Currently, he is pursuing his PhD at University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia.

Research Abstract

Dry eye disease is a multifactorial chronic, progressive, and globally prevalent disorder that affects the ocular surface and tear film. It is clinically categorised as aqueous deficient, evaporative, and mixed dry eye based on the underlying mechanism of the disease process. The mainstay of treatment for dry eye disease is artificial tear supplementation, which mimics tears and improves tear film stability and properties. Various over-the-counter artificial tear products have been introduced, each purporting to offer superior relief from dry eye symptoms. Investigating the comparative efficacy between artificial tear products to treat different dry eye disease subtypes is essential to facilitate informed clinical decision-making and optimise patient outcomes. However, there is lack of scientific evidence to show which artificial tear products are better for the treatment of evaporative dry eye, aqueous dry eye, and mixed dry eye. Therefore, this project aims to compare the efficacy of commercially available artificial tears to generate an evidence-based rational for dry eye disease treatment.
