We spoke to聽Gizelle聽about why聽she chose to study petroleum engineering at 国产精品 and聽on聽her聽future聽role聽at BHP.聽

Why did you choose to study Petroleum Engineering?聽

I am doing聽Petroleum Engineering聽and I chose it because I got聽the聽聽for it.聽

What do you like about your degree and what are your favourite classes?聽

I liked collaborating with friends for聽university聽projects. My favourite subject was聽聽which聽is run differently from other聽faculties.聽Everyone gets the same聽thesis where you get a聽real-life聽petroleum聽scenario聽and you have to analyse it. It was very聽practical,聽and I聽definitely learned聽the most from it.聽

Do you hold a Scholarship and what has it meant for you to be awarded this Scholarship?聽

I hold the聽. It has meant that I could聽actually afford聽to move to Sydney (I鈥檓 from Perth) and pay for all my聽accommodation聽costs. It鈥檚 been financially聽freeing,聽but聽it聽also provided invaluable internships with my sponsor company.鈥

What are your favourite things to do in or around 国产精品 and how can students make the most out of the 鲍狈厂奥听experience?聽聽

Living on campus in a college or joining clubs鈥痑re both invaluable ways of meeting聽like-minded聽people. For me I was able to join the聽聽and was able to grow and make friends.聽

What do you think is the relevance of your degree and why is it important that it exists?聽

I think petroleum engineering is one of the most important degrees out there. Renewable energy is nowhere near capable of providing the energy that Australia and the world needs聽at the moment.聽While technology is being developed for just that, we still need oil and gas for a functioning economy. Without it, transport,聽heating,聽and cooking would be impacted and many others.聽

What do you want to do after completing your degree? How do you think your studies at 国产精品 will help in your career aspirations?聽

I have a job at聽聽starting next year, which will be聽Fly聽In聽Fly Out (FIFO). My degree at 国产精品 enabled me to get this Job.聽

Can you share something about the resources & energy industry that might interest someone considering studies and a career in this industry?聽

I am a petroleum engineer but am going to work in a mining position. Your degree is not as rigid as it seems. Additionally in petroleum companies,聽there are a lot of聽chemical engineers working in petroleum positions聽which聽is due to a shortage of petroleum engineering graduates. Having a petroleum degree will give you an advantage for these job positions.聽As in my case, my background in Petroleum Engineering has helped me to secure a role at BHP and Mining also offers variety and flexibility in the resources industry. If there is a downturn in one commodity, there will still be jobs in the other commodities that my skills can easily be transitioned to.聽

What advice would you give to a new/future student on how to excel at your degree?聽

It is a requirement to complete 12 weeks of internship work at a company to graduate as a聽petroleum聽engineer. I would recommend looking for internships in both petroleum and mining as a petroleum engineer. Therefore,聽you can get an internship in the mining industry and fulfill the聽12-week聽requirement if a petroleum company does not offer you an internship.聽
